Tennie's reputation at school takes a huge damage just before the prom a few years after her mother's death. To add to the daily challenges of adolescence, her father, Robert, a former advertising executive who has since rebuilt his firm, attempts to rebuild his relationship with his daughter. Against his therapist's advise, overeager Robert makes a concerted effort to close the distance between himself and Tennie by demonstrating his own kind of caring. He enlists the assistance of his newly hired, 19-year-old driver/intern, Jack, in an attempt to learn more about his daughter's personal life. Tennie, who is practically being raised by her extended family, is intellectually gifted and mature for her age, with a strong sense of compassion for others. She also has a touch of sarcasm and a tinge of rebelliousness. Tennie knows that in order to appease her father, she must encourage him to locate a lady friend.
